On January 22, 2009, Microsoft announced that it would lay off 1400 people. As part of this, our studio (ACES), was shut down, thereby terminating work on Flight Simulator and ESP.
Most of us (myself included) had the option to search for another job internally at Microsoft.
A severance package was offered to those who did not find another job internally at Microsoft, which would amount to 5 months of salary for me. Those offered another job internally would no longer be eligible for the severance package.
I faced a decision: should I interview with groups internal to Microsoft? Or take the severance package and run?
